• Autism-Friendly Vermont

If you’re an Autism family, where either a parent, child, or multiple family members are Autistic, then you’re probably always on the lookout for Autism-friendly places and activities.

If you live in the Green Mountain State of Vermont, or if you will be planning a road trip to Vermont soon, then you’re in luck. You’ll find plenty of sensory-friendly things to do and places to go. Here are a couple of them.

ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain

The ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain is a non-profit organization dedicated to engaging and inspiring families to discover the joy of science and nature, while taking care of Lake Champlain. They’re located at

    ECHO Sensory-Friendly Sunday

Sunday mornings from 9:00 – 10:00 AM families, kids, teens, and adults with sensory-processing differences, Autism, or developmental disabilities are welcome for a sensory-friendly morning of exploration. The museum is closed to the general public for this hour, so it won’t be too crowded. Lighting and sound effects will be adjusted to create a calm environment. Visit the live animals, interact with ECHO’s exhibits, and try out the sensory backpacks filled with sensory devices. Go to ECHO’s website for details and to RSVP.

    Imagination Station

The Washington County Mental Health Services provides a unique family experience in the Imagination Station in Barre, VT.  This is a particular type of sensory room which is known as a “Snoezelen Room.” This word, which means “explore and relax,”  was coined by two Dutch therapists in the 1970s from words for “sniffing and dozing.” This is the only Snoezelen Room in Northern New England.

The idea here is that visitors have control over their environment, allowing for a unique experience that is appreciated by Autistic families.

The Imagination Station room may be booked in private, one-hour blocks, Monday – Friday, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Check them out at the Washington County Mental Health Services online at wcmhs .org.   Their administrative offices are located at 885 South Barre Road, Barre, VT 05670.

Wherever you are or plan to visit in Vermont, an online search will put you on the right road for many more sensory-friendly and Autism-friendly experiences for you and your Autistic family.

    Have fun!
